Shopping Guide to the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 vs Genesis GV70

There are a number of luxury compact SUVs on the market. Two of the best are the Genesis GV70 and Mercedes Benz GLC Class.

In this comparison, we’ll try to answer the questions most important to luxury shoppers today. Wherever possible, we’ll cite sources and facts to reinforce our findings.

  1. What’s the Level of Luxury in a Genesis vs Mercedes?

As Edmunds writes, the Genesis GV70 is “so packed with value it’s going to be very hard to beat.” They write this in their analysis of the GV70 vs GLC Class for the 2023 model year.

Why would they say that? It’s the long list of standards that come on the GV70. It’s also the way that higher trim levels gain their own amenities to earn their pricetags.

US News and World Report writes that Mercedes Benz GLC Class models are “pricier than most competitors” and that they don’t have as many standard features.

Compared to the GV70 price, the GLC Class price starts out at about $3,000 more. Plus it is rear-wheel drive while the GV70 has all-wheel drive. Adding AWD to the Mercedes costs about $2,000 extra. That brings the GLC Class price difference to $5,000.

If you are like many shoppers, you may see that price difference as an opportunity to get a higher trim level or package with the GV70. This would mean the maximum amenities without paying more than the Mercedes.

  2. How is Value vs Price Important?

Although the Genesis price is about $3,000 less than the GLC price, the GV70 and Mercedes GLC Class models start out with similar luxuries. Both have syn-leather on power adjustable, heated front seats. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate controls, push button start, and a wireless charger.

On the GV70, a 14.5-inch touchscreen and 8-inch digital gauge screen face the driver. On the GLC 300, an 11.9 touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster are paired.

Adding value, Genesis has made the 300-horsepower engine and all-wheel drive standard. This makes the overall package better than the Mercedes even if they were the same price.

  3. Does it Have Luxury Level Ride Quality and Performance?

The Genesis GV70 is ranked #1 at Motor Trend, indicating that it does indeed meet the performance standards and ride quality expectations of today’s luxury buyer.

A 300-horsepower standard engine puts the GV70 ahead. This easily competes with the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 with its 255 horsepower engine.

If you are wondering if the torque rate makes up for it, the Mercedes-Benz rate is 295 lb-ft while the GV70 cruises with 311 lb-ft of torque at the ready. These two are about the same size so the amount of power is key to driving fun.

  1. Is the GV70 Bigger than the Mercedes Benz GLC Class?

The cabins are nearly identical when it comes to passenger space. They offer around 37 inches of legroom for the second row, and the rear headroom is also good for adults.

In the cargo hold, they differ greatly. The Mercedes has about 19 cubic feet for your travel gear. Much better, the Genesis GV70 has a bit over 28 cubic feet. That’s a difference approaching 10 cubic feet. This definitely favors the GV70.

Car and Driver have given a 10 out of 10 to the GV70 and named it a 10Best. They write that it is close to perfection, quite a compliment in any class.

  2. What Kind of Connectivity and Touchscreen Is Available?

The GLC Class has an 11.9-inch touchscreen, lagging behind the GV70 14.5-inch display. Digital instrumentation favors the GLC Class at first, but the GV70 offers to upgrade from its 8-inch screen to a similarly large 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.

Like the Genesis, it has Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both Genesis and Mercedes are offering fingerprint recognition.

A common complaint against the Mercedes Benz GLC Class is its lack of physical controls. Critics write that the brand may have gone too far in using touch controls and voice controls to the exclusion of regular controls. Plus, as Motor Trend has stated, the software “isn’t always intuitive”.

  1. What Driver Assistance is Standard?

Today’s luxury cars should have the maximum driver assistance, and Genesis does not disappoint. Shoppers can expect to have all of the tools of modern living even if they choose the entry level GV70.

This includes systems to watch the front, sides and rear. Every Genesis has a blind spot assist, lane change assist, and full forward collision warning assist system. It comes with adaptive cruise control to handle slow, stop and go conditions in busy traffic. A lane keeper helps it stay centered in its lane.

GLC Class models offer many of these standards. However, Mercedes withholds favorites like adaptive cruise control and lane centering. You can expect to pay extra for them if you choose the GLC 300.

  2. What about Parking Features?

Mercedes are known for automatic parking features. So what can you get on the Genesis GV70?

These models come with a rear cross traffic alert with an assist, a feature that is not a Mercedes standard. They also have rear parking sensors and a safe exit alert for passengers. They offer the Genesis remote parking assist that can be used inside the vehicle or standing to the side with keyfob in hand.

Other parking aids include parking collision avoidance assist and a 360-degree surround view monitor.

Conclusion
